Ron DeHaven, the top US government veterinarian said Monday, that US beef is safe to eat despite a widening recall that covered eight states amid a mad cow scare. DeHaven's optimism did not convince Chicago's sinking beef futures markets or the 30 countries that have so far banned US beef for fear it may spread bovine spongiform encephalopathy.
